Drip, Drip, Drama: Problems That Contribute To A Leaky Roof

A leaky roof can quickly turn from being a mild inconvenience to being a nightmare. If left untreated, a leaky roof can cause extensive damage to your home and even be a risk to your health. You'll want to know what to look for when dealing with a leaky roof and there are plenty of signs of one that's in need of repair.

Water Spots on Your Ceiling

One of the first tell-tale signs of a roof leak is the appearance of water spots inside the home. If you notice any discoloration or anything out of the ordinary, this could be a sign that moisture has somehow made its way past your roof. You definitely do not want to let this go neglected. Extensive exposure to moisture can lead to the growth of mildew and mold which can be extremely hazardous for your health and those who also reside in your home. Other signs from the interior of your home that could mean a potential leak are the smell of mildew or a leaky ceiling during times of precipitation.

Missing or Damaged Shingles

If you live in a region that is no stranger to inclement weather, you'll definitely want to inspect your shingles and the condition of your roof to see if any leaks have made an appearance. High winds and gusts, torrential rain, and hail damage can all have devastating effects on the roof of your home. It is extremely easy for moisture to seep into any area where there is missing roofing material or a shingle has fallen off. Regularly inspect the outside of your home and take note of any missing or damaged shingles as a possible entry point for moisture to enter. When you call in for repairs, be sure to keep tabs on which areas of your roof you have noticed the damage.

Older Homes

For homes that are on the older side, the condition of the roof may be compromised due to natural wear and tear. If you know that your roof hasn't been replaced in a long time, it's probably best to consider new roofing options to help minimize the risk of acquiring leaks. Regardless of the condition of the home, if the roof above it goes too long without being replaced, it can easily affect the rest of the structure. A poor roof will not only be prone to leaks and act as a moisture trap but can also become home to pests including rats, squirrels, and bats. Play it safe and stay up-to-date on the overall condition of your home's roof.

About Me

The Life and Work of Roofers

Your home would not be a home without a roof. A good roof keeps the rain out, provides some insulation against sunlight, and does not easily become damaged when exposed to snow or ice. The roof was put in place by a roofer, who was probably one of the hardest-working people you'll ever meet. Who else can say they stand all day on a pitched surface and perform physical labor? Days as a roofer are long and hot, but we are all thankful for the work these professionals do. On this blog, you can learn more about roofers, their work, and their lives.
